<description>1. secure: maybe. But I think it's more because parents associate video games with television screens. And television is "not good", at the very least because you are staring at a screen instead of looking at your fellow players.

2. fun: are you serious? I can't imagine any parent complaining about the quality of fun that video games provide.

3. inappropriate content: At this, parents are 95% correct. Even family-friendly games often involve nothing more than manual dexterity and shooting skills. Teen games have more visceral content than a typical movie, and again, often little to offer other than shooting skills.

Now there are plenty of game that offer more than shooting skills and manual dexterity. RTS games certain offer a lot of strategy, but then eventually get to the visceral parts anyway. Casual games don't always require shooting, but most often manual dexterity and little else.

And then most games that requires thinking, no shooting, and no dexterity are online versions of - wait for it - board and card games. So why not play those without the $300 console. :-)

And let's not forget the overall point: it's not what games "could be played" it's what games "are" played. And the vast majority of these are focused on manual dexterity and shooting, while board games more advanced than Candyland offer a whole lot more.

4. social: Once again I will point out the obvious: it's not what games "could be" played, but what games "are" played. In the case of the Wii and some other games, it can be very social, as social or more than board games. To a lesser degree, multi-player online games are social, just not FtF, which takes away a bit.

But most games played, and certainly most parent's experience of games played, is single player stare at the screen without any interaction. Even two simultaneous players generally have no verbal interaction. You'll have to have a limited game selection to include mostly social video games.

5. good for you: depends on the board game, too. if you're selecting nostalgic games like Snakes and Ladders or Hungry Hungry Hippos, even a standard video game is probably better. But if the choice is Scrabble, Chess, ore some modern games like Settles of Catan or Ticket to Ride, board games are often the better choice. And cheaper.

And let's not forget, quieter, which is really all that parent want. :-)
